Solstice Open House

Winter, as they say, is coming. But here at Parsons Memorial Library we don’t shy away from the cozy season. We embrace it with our annual Winter Solstice Open House.

On Monday, Dec. 22, at 5 p.m. we invite the community to stop by the library, where we’ll have delicious baked goods, seasonal delights, and a little something special.

Each year that we’ve held our Winter Solstice Open House we’ve asked our patrons and their friends to write haiku inspired by the snowy season. For those unfamiliar, a haiku is a type of short-form poetry of three lines that uses a 5-7-5 format. That means there are five syllables in the first line, seven in the second, and five in the last. For example:

The snow falls softly

A world blanketed in white

Winter has arrived

We’d invite you to write us a haiku or two (or three). Try your hand at this wonderful poetry and then send your completed haiku to us (Haiku Submission) until December 15th.  We’ll turn them into beautiful ornaments and decorations that will be on display at the solstice celebration.

Now, about those goodies. If you’ve been to a community event at PML, such as our annual picnic or our volunteer brunch, you know that we’ve got some amazing bakers and cooks in our community. You’ll be sure to find something to nibble on that’ll bring a smile to your face.

While the main event happens in our Reading Room, be sure to stop by the Community Room to see works on display from the incredible artists who enjoy our Open Studio on Wednesdays. And on one wall will be a special gift to the community from us. Be sure to stop by and see what we’ve made for you.

Our Solstice Open House is one of our favorite events of the year. It’s festive and welcoming and offers people the chance to catch up with friends and neighbors. Come in from the cold and light up the shortest day of the year with us, beginning at 5 p.m. on Dec. 22.
