Summer Reading Gets Growing at PML

There’s nothing quite like the feeling of finishing a good book. Now imagine that doing so not only fulfilled you, but also earned you a prize. That’s what can happen when you sign up for our 2026 Summer Reading Program at PML. This year’s theme is Plant a Seed, Read and is sure to help readers of all ages grow.

Our 2026 Summer Reading Program is rooted in the concept of farm-to-table and we've got a wealth of activities, workshops, and events for our participants on that theme. First, let's talk about what our SRP looks like. One of the most important aspects is that it's for everyone. Readers of all ages are invited to participate, whether they're adults reading chapter books, or littles reading with their families. You can sign up on our website or by stopping in and filling out the form at the circulation desk.

Now, let's talk about what this summer holds! There is so much happening, you'll want to mark your calendars. Beginning in June, just before the program officially begins on June 22, we've got a Teen Night that includes planting, flower crafts, and games. Also in June, we'll have a talk on wild mushrooms with Jim Dochtermann, author of Mushrooms of Maine, and you can learn about the importance of bees from beekeepers Mason Laudarowicz and his mom Danielle.

In July and early August, before the program ends on August 15, we'll welcome Shawn Jalbert of Native Haunts for two informative talks on native plants, Gwen Rench of Ossippee Hill Farm for a talk about flint corn and making masa, and Joshua Girard of Girard Farm about being a diversified vegetable farm.

We'll also dissect flowers with Rebecca Tay of the University of Maine Cooperative Extension in York County, enjoy Plant a Seed, Read-themed story times, and get our improv on with the awesome thespians of Massabesic High School's Mustang Theatre.

But the most important part of Summer Reading is, well, reading! We offer several options to help readers achieve their SRP goals, including keeping track of each individual book read, reading for 30 minutes a day, or choose your own adventure and let us know what it is so we can help you keep track of your summer reading.

Are you ready to get growing this summer? Then stop by the library or visit our website today and sign up for our 2026 Summer Reading Program and Plant a Seed, Read!
