An event that we look forward to each year at Parsons Memorial Library is our Winter Solstice Open House. Winter in Maine can be a magical season, and we do our best to appreciate that with an event that celebrates the magic. The 2025 Winter Solstice Open House was just that.

Leading up to our open house, we ask our library community to put pen to paper and write us haiku poems celebrating the joys - and frustrations - of winter in Maine. We've gotten some wonderful submissions through the years, which have been thoughtfully turned into snowflake decorations adorning the original section of our library so everyone can enjoy them.
Here are this year's submissions:

The incredible bakers in our community also rise to the occasion of our Winter Solstice Open House with plates of delectable cookies and other goodies, to go with crisp apple cider, coffee, hot chocolate, or tea. As you can see, we had a little bit of everything - peanut butter fudge, brownies, chocolate chip, jam-filled hearts, macaroons, chocolate crinkle cookies, and that famous peanut brittle. WOW!

This year saw folks mingling around the Reading Room table, coloring winter-themed images as they nibbled sweet treats before checking out the art exhibit in the Community Room. Friends and neighbors caught up with one another, while Chris Kutzer played beautiful music on guitar from the loft.
Of course, it wouldn't be a party without prizes!
So, before we head into the coming year, we want to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone who made this event so special - our incredible volunteers, the Keepers of PML, our Board of Trustees, and our wonderful community. Thank you for being part of the magic of Parsons Memorial Library!
